Búðir, Snæfellsnes, Iceland

There is a small black church sat on a lava field on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and just about every photographer who goes to Iceland ends up pointing a camera at it. Including me. I'd made my peace with that before I got out of the van.

It is a honeypot, and honeypots are honeypots for a reason. Búðakirkja is tiny, black, and completely on its own out on the Búðahraun lava field with nothing around it but old rock and a great deal of sky. There is no way of photographing it that hasn't been done a thousand times. There is also no way of standing in front of it and not wanting to.

What sold me on it as a print was the emptiness. Strip out the context and you are left with one black shape against a huge pale nothing. It hangs beautifully, and it doesn't shout.

The print

Printed by me, on my own printer, in my spare room. Every print is checked under a proper light before it goes anywhere. If it is not right it does not get sent, it gets binned and I print another one.

  • Paper: Fotospeed NST Bright White 315, 100% cotton, acid free and archival.

  • Inks: Epson Surecolor P900 pigment inks, fade resistant.

  • Border: a white border on all sides, sized for standard frames so a high street frame will fit without a custom mount.

  • Signed in pencil on the border. A2 and A3 are numbered within the edition and arrive with a signed certificate of authenticity.

  • Supplied unframed. Every print ships flat, never rolled, between acid free tissue and rigid board.

Sizes

  • A2, 420 x 594mm, limited edition of 15

  • A3, 297 x 420mm, limited edition of 30

  • A4, 210 x 297mm, open edition

  • 7" x 5", 178 x 127mm, open edition

Once a limited edition size sells out, that image is never printed at that size again.

Shipping

Free tracked UK delivery. Printed and dispatched within 3 to 5 working days, because prints are left to dry properly before they are packed. International shipping is charged at a flat rate at checkout. Import duties, taxes and carrier handling fees are set by your own country and are the buyer's responsibility. I cannot calculate them in advance and I cannot refund them.
