Why a Fine Art Print?
Printed by me. In my spare room. Which I insist on calling a “studio”.
Every print on this page comes off my own printer, onto archival fine art paper, gets checked under a decent light, and gets signed before it goes anywhere near packing. If it isn't right it doesn't get sent.
What you're buying isn't a poster of a nice view. It's the print I'd hang on my own wall, from a photograph I went and stood in the cold for. Usually at an unreasonable hour.
Every limited edition print includes:

Antarctic Peninsula
Probably the best ten minutes I had in Antarctica.
We were sat in a zodiac among a group of icebergs, and one of them had a passenger. A single Adélie penguin stood right on top, entirely unbothered by any of us. A polarising filter cut through enough of the surface glare to show what was going on underneath, which is the part people never see. The tip is not the story. The rest of it is.
After that it was a waiting game. The boat drifts, the berg turns, and eventually the king lined himself up dead centre. Took a while. Worth it.

St Thomas Church, Slovenia
The same church as Church in the Clouds, seen properly this time.
The cloud had settled down into the valley floor and left the hilltops standing clear above it, St Thomas among them. Wider, with context, and you can finally tell the thing is sat on top of a hill.
I like both versions for opposite reasons. This one tells you where you are. The other one flatly refuses to.

St Thomas Church, Slovenia
We had driven up hoping for a bit of cloud. We got considerably more than a bit. Visibility was about ten feet and the whole plan looked finished before it had started.
Then the sun got to work. The white stuff began lifting and burning off, and out of it came the top of St Thomas Church, sat on a hill on the far side of the valley. You would never know it was on a hill from this photograph. That is rather the point.
Shot at 840mm from the opposite side of the valley, which strips out absolutely everything else. No hill, no village, no sense of scale. Just a church floating in cloud.

Lake Bled, Slovenia
A little after first light, walking the shore path at Lake Bled with one very specific job. Find a tree.
Everybody photographs the island. It is a church on an island in a lake with mountains behind it, so of course everybody photographs it. The only way to make it yours is to find something to look through, and in autumn Bled gives you plenty of options if you are willing to keep walking.
We found this one about halfway round. Gold leaves in the top corner, island sat dead centre, mist still hanging on the water. Then a brew.

Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Dolomites
A long day. Sunrise at Cadini di Misurina, a picnic somewhere in the middle of it, then back up for sunset on legs that had already done plenty.
The sky was completely clear, which normally has me grumbling. At 2,500 metres the air is thin enough that you notice it on every single step, and clear skies usually mean a flat, boring end to the day.
Not this time. The last of the light came in low and turned the peaks orange while everything underneath them dropped into shadow. Worth every step, and there were a lot of steps.

Latrigg, Keswick, Lake District
I had walked up Latrigg for the view. The one looking down over Keswick and the whole length of Derwent Water, which is the reason anybody walks up Latrigg.
Then I turned round.
Behind the fell, down in the valley, a stand of birch had gone copper and gold all at once, bunched up tight together with dead bracken behind them. I spent considerably longer on that than I did on the view I had actually come up for.

Brandlehow Park, Derwent Water, Lake District
An afternoon with no particular plan, wandering through Brandlehow Park until the path spat us out at the water's edge.
And there it was. A house sat right on the shore of Derwent Water, catching the last of a winter sunset while everything around it had already gone cold and blue. The sun was so low it was only reaching the tops of the trees behind it.
I would like to claim I had scouted it. I hadn't. Sometimes you walk round a corner and there it is.

Crow Park, Keswick, Lake District
Frosty, cold, and the last morning of a week in the North Lakes. We hauled ourselves down to Crow Park in Keswick for sunrise, largely on the principle that you may as well.
Derwent Water was almost completely still. A few ducks were working their way across it, breaking the surface up just enough to stop the reflection looking too tidy. Then the sun came up and lit Grasmoor, and the whole thing went warm at once.
Not a dramatic morning. Just a very good one, and a reminder that the last day is often the one that pays.

Bempton Cliffs, Yorkshire
A hazy afternoon at Bempton Cliffs with light so flat it was very nearly useless.
So I stopped fighting it. I opened up, blew the background out to nothing, and let the haze do the work for me. There were thousands of gannets wheeling around the cliff tops and most of them came out as streaks. Then this one came in with everything deployed, wings wide, feet down, putting the air brakes on right in front of me.
In black and white there is nothing left but the shape of the bird against white. Which is exactly what I was after, even if I didn't know it when I set off that morning.

Búðir, Snæfellsnes, Iceland
There is a small black church sat on a lava field on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, and just about every photographer who goes to Iceland ends up pointing a camera at it. Including me. I'd made my peace with that before I got out of the van.
It is a honeypot, and honeypots are honeypots for a reason. Búðakirkja is tiny, black, and completely on its own out on the Búðahraun lava field with nothing around it but old rock and a great deal of sky. There is no way of photographing it that hasn't been done a thousand times. There is also no way of standing in front of it and not wanting to.
What sold me on it as a print was the emptiness. Strip out the context and you are left with one black shape against a huge pale nothing. It hangs beautifully, and it doesn't shout.

Booth Island, Antarctica
I didn't go to Antarctica for the birds. I went for the ice. Great absurd slabs of it, blue in a way that doesn't photograph properly and doesn't quite look real in person either. The birds were a bonus. Something to point the long lens at while waiting for the light to do something interesting.
We were drifting in a zodiac off the rocky shore of Booth Island. The afternoon's snow squall had just blown through and left the sky completely flat, an even featureless grey with nothing in it. Then a tern lifted off the rocks. It came up over the boat and, instead of carrying on, it seemed to just stop above our heads and looked straight down at us.
The flat grey was the perfect light box backdrop for a minimal composition. No horizon. No context. Nothing to place it against. Just a bird, suspended and frozen in time. I adore minimal, it looks amazing on a wall in a modern furnished room.
